My fitness journey began when I was very young. With a professional tennis coach as a stepfather, I grew up in the country club, being engaged in weekly tennis lessons since the age of six. The philosophy in our home was if you’re not feeling well- “go for a run.”
While I continued to play tennis throughout my youth, it wasn’t until high school that I really became interested in “fitness.” At the age of fifteen I became fascinated with health and exercise, discovered the weight room in our club, and began studying nutrition. I then went on to study exercise sports science in college, getting my degree in Kinesiology. Though my love for fitness never waned, the next fifteen years of my life were spent pursuing a career in fashion. With the birth of my daughter in 2012, I made the decision to stay home and be a full-time mother.
The day I was given clearance to begin a workout program at six weeks postpartum (ok, I secretly began working out the week prior), I hit the gym hard: doing high impact aerobics; running, jumping and doing tons of abdominal crunches. Basically I was doing everything wrong. I lost all the weight quickly, but my core was not healing.
Frustrated and feeling defeated, I began my own postpartum research, and finally understood my healing was directly related to the strengthening of the Pelvic Floor and Transverse Abdominis.
Having attended several “mama” boot camps around the city, I was surprised to realize that there was not more stress placed around the importance of these muscles for healing postpartum mothers.
Since becoming certified in Pre and Postnatal Fitness, and living through the journey myself as a mother, I now understand the importance of healing in stages. In order to truly recover, women must heal their body from within: proper nutrition, proper breathing and proper exercises.
